Roots and Roosters was born from a simple observation: the hardiest grains and the most flavourful poultry are those that have belonged to our soil for generations. While the world rushed toward commercial farming, we looked back — to the wisdom of our ancestors.
We watched as commercial broilers dominated the market — birds that grew unnaturally fast, pumped with hormones, raised in crowded conditions. We tasted the difference between a Road Runner and a factory-farmed chicken. There was no comparison.
The same was true for our grains. While imported wheat and refined flours filled supermarket shelves, our indigenous small grains — Zviyo, Mhunga, and Mapfunde — were being forgotten. Grains that had sustained our communities for centuries, grains that could thrive without irrigation in our changing climate, were disappearing from our tables.
